Smalls collects as little as it can get away with, publishes only what you ask it to publish, and throws the rest away on a schedule.
Last updated 12 September 2026.
The contact details you put on a listing are published. They go out by email to every subscriber, and that email cannot be recalled. Put on a listing only what you are content to hand to a few thousand strangers — plenty of people use a phone number rather than their main email address, and that is a reasonable thing to do.
The email address you give as your address, the one we send the confirmation link to, is never published and never added to the mailing list.
We keep your email address and nothing else. You will get one email asking you to confirm, and after that only the issues — two a week, Tuesday and Thursday. No marketing, no forwarding, no third parties.
If you never confirm, the address is deleted automatically after 14 days. If you unsubscribe, we keep a record that you did so we do not add you back by accident. If mail to your address permanently bounces or you mark an issue as spam, we retire the address immediately and never send to it again.
We hold, for as long as the listing is on the board:
Listings are wiped after the issue they appear in — so a listing exists for at most a few days. A listing you never confirm is deleted after 48 hours. IP records used for rate limiting are deleted after 48 hours.
Every listing is checked by an automated content classifier before it can be published, to keep scams, illegal goods and abuse out of the issues. The text of your listing is sent to Amazon Bedrock in Sydney for that check. It is not used to train anything, and the result is a verdict and a one-line reason, nothing more.
If the classifier is unsure, a person reads the listing before it runs. If it refuses a listing, you are told why.
On Amazon Web Services in Sydney, Australia — so your information is held outside New Zealand. Automated screening also happens in Sydney. Email is sent through Amazon SES in the same region.
Past issues are kept on this site as a public record, with all contact details removed — both the ones you entered in the contact fields and any phone number or email address written into the description. Contact details exist only in the issues that went to subscribers' inboxes, never on a public page.

We do not sell, rent, or share the subscriber list. There is no way to import addresses in bulk — the only way onto the list is for someone to enter their own address and click the link we email them. There are no advertising trackers, no analytics scripts, and no third-party JavaScript on this site. The only cookie is the one that keeps the administrator signed in.
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask what personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it. Email hello@smalls.co.nz and we will answer within 20 working days.
You can unsubscribe from any issue in one click, and those links never expire. If you want a listing taken down before its issue goes out, email us and we will remove it.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
